Karen Smith
Karen Smith is our resident activist. We can only have her part-time because this little Texas Tornado is the champion of just about every good cause within a hundred mile radius. She has spearheaded a citizen’s group effort to achieve a moratorium in our county on erecting ugly roadside billboards…while she simultaneously takes on Verizon to speed up installation of high-speed internet cable in our community. She’s politically charged as well and actively serves the local Democratic Party in a tough conservative stronghold. She really gets off on that.
Karen and her husband Marvin are neighbors who moved here a year or so ago from Dallas to “make art under the New Mexico skies.” Marvin is a potter and Karen a nationally recognized quilter. Her compelling art quilts have won prizes in nearly every exhibition she’s entered. Karen’s weakness for photography helped us convince her to work with us – and her artistic eye and steady hands have become invaluable as we work to select, sort and clean transparencies for scanning Who knows, maybe one day we can get her to take up the cause of photographers’ rights in the Digital Age. Then just watch out!
